Turns out the way it works under the hood is that requestLayout and forceLayout just set a few flags on the view object; they don't “schedule” anything, contrary to the docs. requestLayout recursively calls itself on the parent, which is what gives the signal to Android the next time it goes to draw the screen that some stuff needs laying out again. forceLayout sets the same flags, but only on itself.
